Ghanaian singer and actress, Adomaa has not always been confident of her skin growing up as she attempted to bleach in order to fit in.

Now in her 30s, the award-winning musician said she battled with a number of insecurities including impostor syndrome, her dark skin in an era where light skin was the preference, and the challenges with fame.

Speaking in a recent interview with Yaa Somuah, the alternative/jazz songbird revealed that she was bullied in a boarding school in Nigeria for having darker skin.

Adomaa who grew up in Nigeria until 2004 when her family moved to Ghana recounted hearing statements such as, “Oh, you are so dark, oh my God the sun in Ghana, does it burn people?? It made me feel very very insecure, I am not proud of it but there are times I actually attempted bleaching just to fit in.”

Speaking further on her challenges with fame, Adomaa admitted that the celebrity lifestyle is not normal and that it can be difficult to navigate the lack of privacy that comes with being in the spotlight.

“I don’t think it is normal for any human being to live their lives where everybody is a part of every single thing that they are doing. The celebrity kingdom is not normal, I feel like everybody has vulnerable moments, has everyday lives and there are certain things you want to keep for yourself,” she pointed out

Adomaa who plays the lead actress in Dede on Akwaaba Magic has recently opened up about her struggles with depression and how she’s learnt to cope with her mental health.

Despite this, she has come a long way in building self-love and self-confidence.

Born Joy Onyinyechukwu Adomaa Serwaa Adjeman, the former VGMA Unsung artist believes that certain information should be shared with only family even as a public figure

“There are certain things you allow yourself to be open to family, and there is a version of yourself that you allow to be open to friends, there are layers to it but when you are in this spotlight you have no privacy and it is not normal,” she hammered
