Afrobeat is highlife – Ephraim

Music producer and singer Ephraim has opined that the Afrobeat genre popularised by Nigerian musicians is highlife, which originated from Ghana.

“For me, I think Afrobeat is highlife,” he said.

“There is a rhythm the moment it comes in a song it makes the song a highlife song, so this whole Afrobeat thing, we are just trying to make sure our music gets into that space that’s why we are all calling it Afrobeat but for me it’s highlife.”

Ephraim, born Ephraim Churchill Gakpetor, shared this opinion on TV3‘s New Day on Tuesday, July 11.

He said the Nigerians have pushed the Afrobeat “agenda” to the fore that highlife has been relegated to the background, leaving Ghanaian musicians to follow the Afrobeat craze.

“It’s because, I think, we have also lost our identity as Ghanaians owning highlife. So we are trying to fit in what’s happening so we can be recognised.

“The Nigerians are playing highlife and calling it Afrobeat, so it has made us repeat that same mistake [by] playing highlife and calling it Afrobeat.”
