Rex Omar, the chairman of the interim management committee of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) has strongly denied the neglect allegations made by veteran highlife musician Akosua Agyapong against GHAMRO regarding the late Kwadwo Akwaboah, also known as Akwaboah Snr.
In a heated exchange on social media, Rex Omar, while expressing his disbelief, referred to Akosua as “the biggest liar” for not speaking up until after the man’s passing.
“Akosua is the biggest liar! So why didn’t she speak about it till now that the man is dead?” he queried
During an interview with Tony Best on Kumasi-based Akoma FM’s Entertainment 360 on Saturday, May 20, Akosua Agyapong claimed that GHAMRO’s executives often cheated and neglected musicians in need, diverting a significant portion of their royalties for personal use.
She specifically highlighted the case of Kwadwo Akwaboah, stating that he had informed her before his death that he had received a mere GH¢250 in royalties, which she considered to be evidence of cheating.
But Rex Omar has vehemently contested Akosua’s accusations, asserting that their welfare books contained no records supporting her claims.
He emphasized that Kwadwo Akwaboah was a proud man who would never have made such allegations.
“We have no such records in our welfare books. Kwadwo was a very proud man and will never say any such thing to anyone,” he contested
According to the ‘Abiba’ singer, throughout his illness, Akwaboah Snr had requested assistance from GHAMRO only once, and it was in the form of transportation to the hospital to meet his doctor, with the funds being directly paid to the medical facility.
“During his entire years of sickness it’s only once he has ever asked for assistance from Ghamaro and when we did Ghamro welfare led took to him to the hospital in their vehicle to meet his doctor and there was no money paid to Kwadwo himself but to the hospital,” he disclosed
Rex Omar also cited the existence of records to substantiate his statements.
Expressing his frustration, Rex Omar questioned why Akosua had suddenly assumed the role of Kwadwo’s spokesperson after his passing and urged her to refrain from spreading fabricated stories, allowing the deceased to rest in peace.
“Records are there to prove this, Kwado is dead so all of a sudden Akosua has become his spokesperson? She should shut up with her fabricated stories and let the man rest in peace,” he added.
Akosua Agyapong has vowed to prevent GHAMRO executives from attending the One-Week Observation, scheduled for Tuesday, May 30 in Kwadwo Akwaboah’s hometown of Trede in the Ashanti Region and it remains to be seen if there will be a face-off between herself and the GHAMRO executives.
The Ghanaian entertainment industry was thrown into a state of mourning on May,16 after it was announced that legendary figure, Akwaboah Snr and the father of renowned singer Akwaboah Jnr. has passed on.
He was well known for his song Awerekyekyere, Odo Bra (W’akye3), Opintin, Adesre and many others.
