Ghana kicked off their campaign in the WAFU B U-20 Girls Cup with an impressive 3-0 victory over Benin on Saturday.

Maafia Nyame, Captain Stella Nyamekye, and Mary Amponsah were the goal scorers, securing all three points for coach Yussif Basigi’s side.

The Black Princesses started the game strongly, creating several scoring opportunities in the opening minutes. However, their wastefulness in front of goal prevented them from taking an early lead. Maafia Nyame came close to breaking the deadlock, but her shot from inside the box was saved by the Benin goalkeeper.

Despite facing resistance from the opposition, the Black Princesses continued to press for the opener. It was Maafia Nyame who eventually found the back of the net, giving Ghana a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, coach Yussif Basigi made a substitution, bringing on Mary Amponsah for Faiza Seidu to add more attacking impetus. Stella Nyamekye and Mary Amponsah further extended Ghana’s lead, scoring in the 60th and 61st minutes, respectively.

Benin tried to stage a comeback but were met with a resilient defence and outstanding goalkeeping from Afi Amenyaku. The match concluded with a convincing 3-0 victory in favour of the Black Princesses.

Ghana will now prepare to face Cote D’Ivoire in their next Group A fixture on Saturday, May 27, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
