Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has served notice he will go after a current minister who owns four mansions situated in succession in the plush Accra suburb of East Legon.
He describes the houses as “gargantuan” and worth “millions of dollars”.
“About a few months ago, somebody took me to East Legon and showed me four houses belonging to a certain minister,” he stated on The Keypoints on TV3/3FM on Saturday, August 5.
“A current minister straight since he came into office. I have been talking about [it]. We will deal with it. Don’t be scared of death,” he told host Alfred Ocansey.
He said he will turn to this particular case after his engagement with the Office of Special Prosecutor (OSP) over another pending issue.
For him, there should be boldness on the part of citizens in reporting public officers who amass wealth illegally.
He said the person who took him to see the mansions was scared because of victimisation.
“He is scared. He doesn’t want to go forward so he sees me making noise here, so to speak, and he says Kpebu, you come and I will show you something. Gargantuan houses. Millions of dollars.”
For him, Ghanaians are timid in reporting public officers and that does not augur well for democracy.
He is, therefore, advocating a law that can allow whistle blowing over illegally acquired wealth by public officers as the current bill with the Attorney General is not “fit for purpose”.
“The point is that the bill that the Presidency currently has which is being drafted by the Attorney General and has done work on it is not fit for purpose. That’s the point we have to make.
“Without the issue of publication of assets and without the issue of automatic lifestyle audit at the time each appointee is exiting, the bill is not good and not fit for purpose at all.
“If we want to tackle corruption, if we want to tackle unexplained wealth, look Ghanaians, let’s be bold. Let’s come up and let’s do it,” the private legal practitioner rallied.
“Let’s be courageous. If we don’t, then we are not ready for this democracy.”
