A presidential staffer, Miracles Dennis Aboagye, has said that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) supports the anti-LGBTQ+ bill which is currently being considered by Parliament.

The bill, seeks to proscribe LGBTQ+ and related activities, proscribe propaganda of, advocacy for or promotion of LGBTQ+ and related activities, and provide for the protection of and support for children and persons who are victims or accused of LGBTQ+ and related activities, has been met with criticism from some human rights groups.

However, Aboagye has dismissed these concerns, saying that the bill is in line with Ghanaian culture and values.

In an interview on Citi TV‘s political show, the Big Issue, Miracles Dennis Aboagye, allayed fears that the government will prevent the Bill from being passed by parliament.

“This LGBTQ+ is not going to survive in this country, as a country we wouldn’t have committed any crime against humanity if it doesn’t survive. After all, there are so many things in this world that we don’t do, and there are so many things happening here in Ghana people don’t do. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. As a global community, we need to understand the differences and not to impose our economic power, political strength on everybody.

“That’s why I’m not surprised that this LGBTQ+ passed through parliament peacefully without any difficulty from anybody. I don’t foresee any such difficulty. In Ghana, it’s madness, it’s either you are sick or mad and of course, madness is even sickness. You need to seek help either medical or phycological help.

“Nobody is fighting you with this law if you want to do it, but don’t splash it in our faces. NPP supports the Bill, since all 275 MPs support the bill, in essence, all NPP MPs support it.

He raised concerns about the name tagging among MPs calling on both Majority and Minority caucuses to desist from embarking on unnecessary political expediency.

“Let’s completely stop pointing accusing fingers at each other since those against and are for don’t have marks indicating that they are gays or lesbians. Let’s stop doing it for political expedience. We are going to pass it, can we look at the details? There are a lot of grey areas that we need to fine-tune. You cannot tell who is portraying to be gay and who is not,” the presidential staffer stated.
