Retired Colonel also not happy with IGP’s style but. . .

Retired Colonel Festus Aboagye says he has disagreements with the style of current Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

Nonetheless, he stressed, that should not warrant any calls for his dismissal or description as the worst IGP ever.

He recalled his time in the army, observing that as officers, they could get commanders whose leadership styles they might not be comfortable with but they still worked under them.

“I might have my disagreements with the IGP around questions of his style, not that the IGP is corrupt,” he mentioned.

“He has not embezzled police funds, he has not misapplied the resources that have been given to him. It is all about very little things like welfare and whatever it is,” Col Aboagye pointed out.

He was speaking on TV3‘s Ghana Tonight as regards the witnesses given by some two senior police officers before the seven-member ad hoc committee probing the leaked audio recording on the IGP.

The recording, which has been tagged doctored by the two police officers, captured their voices together with that of former Northern Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Daniel Bugri Naabu plotting to remove the current IGP.

According to the two senior officers – a Commissioner of Police and a Superintendent – in the audio, there is despondency within the rank and file of the Ghana Police Service over the leadership style of IGP Dampare.

But Col Aboagye (rtd) said the issues raised by the two officers at the committee do not warrant an ousting of the IGP.

COP George Alex Mensah, who is the Director General of Operations, even described Dr Dampare as the “worst” IGP he has seen in his 31 years of active service.

“So, are they really professional police officers?” Col Aboagye (rtd) wondered.

“We’ve all worked under different commanders from the time that we were second lieutenant. There were some that we liked. There were some that we didn’t hate but we were not comfortable with their style of leadership but we did not conspire against them.”

He said the evidence coming out makes the Service worse off.

He lamented the degree of politicisation, describing it as “worrisome”.

“So, now you need to put a label on your forehead that you are a police officer but you are an NDC police and NPP police.”
