The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has congratulated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its Assin North Parliamentary Candidate, James Gyakye Quayson, for the victory chalked in Tuesday’s by-elections.
It said the victory only adds to Ghana’s democratic credentials.
The ruling party said it had worked diligently towards annexing the seat but the results were otherwise.
The NPP, therefore, indicated that it respects the decision by the people of Assin North Constituency.
“While we had diligently worked towards reclaiming the Assin North parliamentary seat, we respect the decision and judgement of the people of the Assin North Constituency,” the NPP said in a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong.
It said the two recent by-elections “have demonstrated the strength of the country’s democracy, with outcomes favouring different political parties”.
The NPP won the Kumawu by-elections last month, retaining its seat.
It, however, lost the Assin North seat, having occupied it between 2016 and 2020.
The party took exception to the conduct of some police officers though commending the security services “for their joint efforts during and after the elections”.
“We further commend the Electoral Commission for ensuring a successful election,” the statement said, adding the hundreds of journalists who worked tirelessly and responsibly to provide up-to-the-minute updates on the polls to the list of stakeholders commended.
The party says it will take stock as it views the outcome of the elections as a wake-up call.
