The Assin North Constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a strong warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) not to entertain any motives of unleashing violence if a possible by-election is declared by the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC).

According to the NDC Constituency Chairman, Felix Benefo, the NPP is plotting evil towards any by-election in the Constituency.

“We are sounding warning to them that if they try to unleash violence as they did in the 7th December 2020 elections, by spoiling our MP’s car by using state securities, we shall retaliate squarely,” Mr Benefo told journalists at a press conference on Friday, May 19.

“Moreover, we are ready to match them boot for boot, and it will be a ‘do or die’ affair in a possible bye-election in Assin North.”

The presser follows a Supreme Court judgement on Wednesday, May 17, ordering the legislature to expunge James Gyakye Quayson’s name from all its records.

His nomination, elections and swearing-in as a lawmaker was deemed unconstitutional.

Mr Gyakye Quayson is said to have flouted Article 94(2)(a) of the 1992 Constitution.

But the Assin North branch of his party described the Supreme Court judgement as politically motivated and lacking common sense.

“In our view, the ruling is wicked, lacks common sense and is not developmental-oriented.”

It said the likes of Assin Central MP Ken Ohene Agyapong are behind the deposition of the Assin North MP.

The NDC Constituency Chairman backed Mr Gyakye Quayson for the impending by-election if held, assuring him that the executives “are solidly behind you in these turbulent times, and we wish to assure you that you remain our surest bet, and for that matter, we shall always at all times rally behind you to work extra harder to maintain you in a possible bye-election”.
