Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has modestly responded to the possibility of a statue in his honour if he leads Ghana to victory in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) next year.
To secure their place in the Ivory Coast for the tournament expected to start in early 2024, the Black Stars need to avoid defeat in their last qualifying match in September against Central African Republic at home.
If Ghana qualify, Hughton and his team will aim to end the nation’s long wait for an AFCON title, which has spanned over four decades. When asked about the potential of a statue should he achieve this milestone, Hughton said on TalkSport, “First and foremost, it’s about getting there [AFCON], but once you get there, you’d want to perform well.”
“One thing I have seen during my travels with the team is that the levels of the African countries now have improved.”
“I think it’s because of infrastructure, so many of the African players are now playing at good levels, good clubs with good structure, and no doubt the level of the AFCON will continue to improve.”

Having been appointed as coach in February, Hughton’s tenure has resulted in one win and two goals scored in three games.
