The Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, George Alex Mensah, says the tape said to have captured him in a conversation with some persons including former Northern Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Daniel Bugri Naabu is doctored.
He said the tape he heard played to him on the public address (PA) system during hearing by the seven-member special committee was different from the conversation they had.
“Hon. Chair, what I am saying is that the tape that I heard today, there are so many things in that tape that I don’t remember and there are certain things that I remember we discussed that are not on the tape,” he told the committee on Thursday, August 31 when he appeared before the Atta Akyea Committee.
His witness comes contrary to a confession by Chief Bugri Naabu that he recorded the conversation.
The confession, which has been described by the committee’s chairman as “positive judicial confession”, ostensibly validates the authenticity of the tape.
“The reason for recording this tape is that they are coming to tell me to go and tell the President something that they know what they are saying, and it is either I don’t go to tell the President and then I and my party suffer for it, and if I also go to talk to the President, it is good to tell him the right thing and since I cannot keep everything they were telling me at that point, it was very good to record, and I know the President that if I go and tell him something, and it turns not to be true, next time he won’t give me respect,” the former Northern Region Chairman of the governing party confessed on Monday, August 28.
However, the Commissioner of Police (COP) said despite having a conversation with the top NPP man, what he heard at the committee sitting on Thursday, August 31 “is an edited tape”.
“Hon Chair, I identified some voices that resemble my voice but I cannot say specifically that these are my voices,” he stressed.
COP Mensah could not, however, tell when exactly the conversation took place.
The committee has been tasked by the Speaker of Parliament to, among others, investigate the authenticity of the leaked audio recording, which is said to have captured the top officers conspiring to remove the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
The committee will recommend sanctions to persons who will be found culpable after its hearings.
Meanwhile, the government has assured that IGP Akuffo Dampare will not be removed as suggested in the leaked audio recording.
“There is no plot to remove anybody,” Interior Minister Ambrose Dery told journalists in Accra last month.
“I can assure you that I serve a president who is committed and has respect for human rights. Under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, we will make sure that 2024 is peaceful.
“One thing to be sure, 2024 will not be a violent election by anybody and no one will want to thwart the will of the people. If you vote us in, you vote us in, if you vote us out, you vote us out.”
