In a significant milestone for Ghana’s ambitious nuclear energy programme, the country has received an overwhelming response to its Request for Information (RFI) from potential developers and vendors.

A total of 15 responses were received, marking a crucial step forward in the nation’s journey towards harnessing the power of nuclear technology.

The RFI, issued by the Ghanaian government through the Ministry of Energy, aimed to gather vital information to support the decision-making process for vendor and technology selection. The responses received has enabled further engagement with prospective developers and vendors, bringing Ghana closer to the realization of its nuclear ambitions.

The Phase 2 activities of Ghana’s nuclear programme include a range of crucial steps to ensure the successful implementation of nuclear energy. These activities encompass the following key areas:

1. Follow-up Request for Information: In order to make an informed decision regarding the selection of vendors and technologies, the government initiated a further vendor engagement process. This step demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to thoroughly evaluate all options and make the most suitable choice for its nuclear programme.

2. Project Feasibility Report: A comprehensive project feasibility report will be prepared, assessing various aspects such as technical feasibility, economic viability, and regulatory requirements. This report will serve as a crucial guide in shaping the future of Ghana’s nuclear endeavours.

3. Site Approval & Site Permit Report: The identification and approval of the preferred site for the first nuclear plant is a vital component of the nuclear programme. A site approval report has been prepared for regulatory engagement and approval of the preferred site. A thorough site characterisation to further assess the suitability of the selected location, taking into account geological, environmental, and safety considerations will be carried-out next.

4. Environmental Impact Assessment: Prioritising sustainability and environmental responsibility, Ghana is committed to conducting a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). This assessment will evaluate the potential ecological and social impacts of the proposed nuclear project, ensuring that all necessary precautions are taken to protect the environment and local communities.

5. Nationwide Nuclear Information, Communication, and Education Campaign: Recognizing the importance of public engagement and awareness, Ghana intends to undertake a nationwide campaign in collaboration with relevant ministries and agencies. This campaign will aim to educate and inform the public about the benefits, safety measures, and potential impacts of nuclear energy, fostering a well-informed national discourse.

6. Completion and Approval of Major Regulations: To establish a robust regulatory framework, Ghana will prioritize the completion and approval of major regulations governing the nuclear industry. These Phase 2 activities follow the successful completion of Phase 1, which involved several pivotal milestones. The government’s issuance of the Request for Information generated a significant response, with six large reactor and nine Small Modular Reactor (SMR) proposals received and thoroughly evaluated. Based on the evaluation, the responses were subsequently submitted to the government for a decision.

Building on the phase one comprehensive report, Ghana’s President announced the nation’s determination to continue the development of its nuclear programme, emphasizing the importance of nuclear energy as a key component of the country’s power generation mix. Ghana is also actively collaborating with advanced countries to build competencies and leverage their expertise in nuclear technology.

Stakeholder engagement has been a crucial aspect of Ghana’s nuclear journey, with efforts focused on strengthening existing relationships and fostering new partnerships. These interactions ensure that all relevant stakeholders, including local communities, are involved in the decision-making process and have a voice in shaping Ghana’s nuclear future.
