Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo has said the planned Limited Voter Registration exercise to be conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC) will amount to voter suppression.

Although, he said, the exercise is backed by law, there are a lot of impediments that make it difficult for persons to register to enable them to vote.

The elections management body has announced the commencement of limited voter registration for eligible Ghanaians who turned 18 years after the 2020 registration exercise and other eligible voters from September 12, 2023, to October 2, 2023.

But speaking on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3 Tuesday, August 29, Mr Tameklo said “Quite clearly, any decision to conduct a limited registration exercise that is constitutionally sanctioned will amount to what is called voter suppression.

“Usually, limited voter regsiretaion, even though backed by law, is a strategy deliberately to disenfranchise some people and the impression is usually done in such a way that it limits, it creates impediments making it extremely difficult for would-be registrants to avail themselves of the process of registration and it is clear that this particular electoral commission is bent on doing exactly just that.”
