The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, says the letter making rounds on social media about the Presidency demanding an apology from Qatar-based international media organisation Al Jazeera is just to throw dust into the eyes of Ghanaians.
“They are just deceiving Ghanaians that the President is angry with Al Jazeera,” Sammy Gyamfi said.
He stated this while speaking on The Keypoints on TV3/3FM on Saturday, April 29.
On Thursday, April 27, the Executive Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo, officially wrote to Al Jazeera Network, communicating President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s displeasure about a documentary aired on the network.
“The documentary in question made baseless claims that the President acted as a lawyer for one Mr Alistair Mathias and implied that the president personally benefited unlawfully from an alleged $100million state infrastructure contract purportedly awarded to Mr Mathias.”
Nana Asante Bediatuo, consequently, demanded an apology and a retraction from Al Jazeera.
“It is imperative that you act forthwith on this request within seven days from the date of receipt of this letter.”
But Sammy Gyamfi said the letter was just thrown into the media to deceive Ghanaians.
He said his checks show that even the representatives of Al Jazeera in Accra have not received any such letter from the Presidency.
“They have not received the letter,” he stressed, adding that the headquarters in Doha have also not received the letter.
Responding to this, former Deputy Transport Minister Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, who was also on the programme, said it is a matter of time for Al Jazeera to receive the letter and respond to same.
He said timing around such correspondence takes a while but definitely the Doha-based organisation will respond soon.
