Ghana goalkeeper Joseph Wollacott’s expected return to the Black Stars has suffered another setback as the Hibernian man could only be fit by late September according to the latest update on his thigh injury.

The shot-stopper after switching clubs from Charlton Athletic in the English League One to Scotland sustained an injury while making his debut last week in a Europa Conference League qualifying game against Andorran outfit Inter d’Escaldes.

After undergoing a scan to know the extent of the injury, Lee Johnson the team’s coach has predicted the fastest recovery period for the 26-year-old could be six weeks as the team anticipates official comments from the surgeon.

“He’s had his scan but we’ve not had the surgeon’s review yet. More than likely, in a best-case scenario it will be a muscle tear. In a worst-case scenario, it will involve a tendon as well. Minimum, from all the information I’ve got, he will be ruled out for six weeks but it could be worse than that.”

Wollacott might also not be available for selection for the Black Stars’ next game because Ghana is scheduled to meet CAR at the Baba Yara Stadium in the final round of games in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on September 7.

Ghana must either draw or win to ensure its participation in the AFCON, which will be held in Ivory Coast next year.
